Abstract

This text includes six sections and the conclusion. In the first, we explain what Media
Ecology. In the second one, we point out how technology has observed through history
a leading role in the cultural transformation of societies. In the third, we emphasize that
the new digital media not only act as extensions of the preceding media, they also
operate as amplifiers. In the fourth section we focus our attention on remediation and
hypermediation. In the fifth, we highlight that the new digital ecology opens challenges
and opportunities to people, companies and institutions. In the sixth section we present
a typology related to the adoption of innovations, highlighting the discontinuity that
occurs in innovative products, and conclude by introducing the term digital wisdom,
from which, to a large extent, the future of the human species could depend on the
imaginary of the fourth industrial revolution.
